“WE ARE NOT AFRAID- #IndonesiaUnite” Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WE ARE NOT AFRAID #Indonesiaunite

A Social Message To Move The Masses

One voice from one person perhaps may not be heard

One voice from thousands of people, is a different story

Friday, 17 July 2009. When Jakarta was shattered by bombs, the nation heaved in emotion. Many were disappointed, and many condemned the attacks. But where must we voice our opinion?

Luckily there are social media like Twitter, Facebook and others, which enables thousands of people with one voice, move at the same time. Without coordination or command, it seems that equal opinions and aspiration can move forward easily.

In one day, thousands on Twitter voiced the same sentence:

WE ARE NOT AFRAID #Indonesiaunite

The statement KAMI TIDAK TAKUT (WE ARE NOT AFRAID) was inspired by Pandji Pragiwaksono’s song, a local rapper who had released a song titled KAMI TIDAK TAKUT. The song, which is on Youtube (www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEw1iHc6CP4) reached 200 views in 4 hours after it was aired, and now has reached over 3,000 views with comments supporting the statement “WE ARE NOT AFRAID”.

On Twitter, Friday, 17 July 2009, already there were thousands of tweets stating the #indonesiaunite spirit. #Indonesiaunite became number one Trending Topic on Twitter on 17,18 and 19 July 2009, and  #indonesiaunite tweets are adding by the day. Also, in a very short time, thousands of Indonesian Twitter users have added a red and white element to their avatars.

Within hours, a website was formed, indonesiaunite.com to support the WE ARE NOT AFRAID #indonesiaunite campaign:

At almost the same time, others made the Facebook Public Profile (Page) with the address http://facebook.com/indonesiaunite, and within a day, the IndonesiaUnite! Facebook page obtained more than 5,000 supporters as of Sunday, 19 July 2009. Everybody involved with the page actively voiced their opinions and aspirations about IndonesiaUnite! – and shortly thereafter, the website and Facebook page collaborated.

Realizing that the movement must be heard by a wider audience, the movement agreed to take the statement out of online media. The idea of rekindling the red & white spirit was well received – which was then continued by the idea of making a t-shrt with the writing “Kami Tidak Takut – #IndonesiaUnite”.

The idea of 1 distro/clothing label, 1 dozen t-shirts, 1 message “Kami Tidak Takut – #IndonesiaUnite” was well received by independent clothing distro communities in Indonesia, who agreed to produce the t-shirts as a form of their nationalism.

This statement will continue to be voiced, and spread to wider audiences.

Join us in stating WE ARE NOT AFRAID #Indonesiaunite.

Let’s join hands and step forward together!
